After clawing their way back from a five-run deficit and nearly grabbing a win last Tuesday against Colusa, Pierce looked to even the score on Friday against the LadyHawks. On their home field, Pierce watched their hopes slip away early and suffered a 9-6 loss to Colusa.
Colusa scored on a single by Makayla Frias, a double by Dyanna Santana, and steal at home plate by Abby Huskey, to take an early 4-0 lead over the Lady Bears. On Offense for Pierce, Emily Ehrke wasted no time with a double on a fly ball to centerfield, followed by a hard grounder by Grace Alonso for the RBI. Halle Charter’s single on a fly ball to left field brought runner Alonso in for a 4-2, LadyHawk lead.
Pierce looked for a quick three up, three down at the top of the second but with two outs, Colusa’s Helena Harris homered on a fly ball over centerfield, bringing the LadyHawk lead to 5-2. Alonso would be the sole scorer for Pierce at the bottom of the second, leaving a 5-3 score. Pierce held Colusa to just two runs and brought in three runs of their own over the next three innings. But time just ran short for the Lady Bears as the game slipped away and the three point score deficit became unrecoverable.
Pierce collected nine hits on that day. Alonso and Charter collected multiple hits and lead the Lady Bears on offense. Katlyn Nickell was in the circle for Pierce, allowing four hits and four runs over one inning and walking zero. Sierra Murphy threw six innings in relief.
Colusa racked up 13 hits by key batters Alexis Price, Edith Moreno, Harris, Huskey and Santana. Price led Colusa with four hits in and four at bats. ■
