Stagehands to present Charlotte’s Web

“Charlotte’s Web” by E.B. White is the focus of the upcoming Virginia Yerxa’s Community Read and The Stagehands Children Theatre have been rehearsing to present a live version of the youth classic in literature.

The play is directed by Susan Gibbs and features a cast of 17 children, two teenagers, and 13 adults, all in handmade costumes. The talent will grace the stage for five performances, starting Friday, April 26.

Although there is young blood on the stage, The Stagehands turns 50 this year.

The beloved tale of “Charlotte’s Web” is considered enjoyable to adults as well as children. The novel tells the story of a pig named Wilbur and his friendship with a barn spider named Charlotte, who spins inspirational messages in her web in order to save Wilbur from slaughter.

Performances will be held at The Stagehands Theatre, located on the Colusa County Fairgrounds, 1303 10th St., Colusa. Refreshments will be included in the $10 ticket.

All proceeds go back into the theater for needed improvements, such as a new curtain or updates to the heat/air conditioning, Gibbs said.

There will be five performances of “Charlotte’s Web” for audiences: April 26-27; May 3-4 at 7:15 PM, with one matinee showing on April 28 at 2:15 PM.

Virgina Read Day is Saturday, April 27, with multiple events planned. Author Seth Lerer, professor of literature at UC San Diego, will discuss “Charlotte’s Web” in the larger context of women in children’s literature, from 1-2:30 PM inside Rocco’s Banquet Hall in Colusa. There will also be a weaving and fiber workshop from 2:30-4 PM on the patio at Rocco’s and Caffenated. Fiber artists Travis Meinolf, Ani Lee, Margot Becker, and Sierra Reading. Also be sure to visit the Colusa Library, the Friends Around the Block Quilt Shop, and the Colusa County Arts Council showroom on Saturday for other VYCR activities. ■
