Colusa RedHawks wrap in season playoffs

Colusa High School students have had a lot on their plates with finals and end-of-the-year events. The hard work of the student athletes all year had culminated in advancing to the playoffs but the RedHawks baseball team wrapped up their season with a win and a loss in the 2019 NSCIF Division 4 playoffs.

In the May 14 win against the University Preparatory School in Redding, won 5-2.

The Redhawks held the U-Prep Panthers to a single run in the first inning with a RBI by Damien Cabral. Colusa then loaded the bases with their first three pitches.

At bat, RedHawk Christian Lyss grounded into a fielders choice, sending Panther Clayton Angus to home plate for a tied score, 1-1.

A wild pitch by U-Prep allotted for the second run of the inning by Blake Steidlmayer for a 2-1 Redhawk lead.

On a 2-2 pitch, Leo Guzman hit an inside-the-park home run on a line drive to right field for a 4-1 Colusa lead. Cody Free’s steal at home base gave an early 5-1 lead over U-Prep.

The next five innings went scoreless for both teams, with a three up, three out scenario. At the top of the seventh, U-Prep was able to reach home plate one last time on a single line drive to centerfield, giving Colusa the win and advancement to round two of playoffs.

Lyss pitched Colusa to victory going all seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits, striking out ten and walking one.

That joy of victory, however, led to the agony of defeat in the May 21 playoff game agaist Winters.

The number two ranked RedHawks descended to the number one seed Winters Warriors for the second round of playoffs. The RedHawks struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Winters.

Winters started the game with almost back-to-back homeruns for a 2-0 Winters lead. On offense in the top of the second, Cole Simmons’ RBI brought Lay across home plate, giving Colusa their first score of the game.

Winters scored two runs in the bottom of third for a 5-1 lead agaist Colusa. Winters went on to claim two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and four more runs in the sixth inning to take a 11-1 victory.

Lay led Colusa with two hits in two at bats. Lyss allowed five hits, six runs, and struck out five.

The RedHawks ended their season with a 23-8 overall record.

Colusa seniors comprise over a third of the team, however, if the juniors take all the experience and build from this year’s efforts, fans will have a reason to look forward to an exciting season next year. ■
