The 3+ Club Scholastic Recognition Day will be Thursday, June 6, opening day of the Colusa County Fair.
CCOE has sent notes to the students to inform them that they have been accepted into the club. Those looking to receive their incentives must check in at the Colusa County Fair (near the entrance).
A grade point average of 3.0 or above would mean a student is at least a B average. Colusa County Office of Education said a record-breaking number of over 1,000 students have achieved good grades.
The students will also get an extra pat on the back during this year’s Colusa County Fair. Students from all of the schools who have a GPA of 3.0 or better have been inducted into the 3+ Club. CCOE has been asking for donations to further encourage the scholastic efforts of students in the club. Donations have purchased some very exciting gifts for the youths, which will be on tables outside the Colusa County Fair entrance along with free tickets and a coupon for free food. Additionally, a name will be drawn every minute for “special prizes.”
Jennifer Jelavich, literacy and public relations coordinator at CCOE, was one of the members on the shopping trip for those “special prizes” along with her predecessor, Irmalee Schumacher, who has been the 3+ Club Coordinator for 18 years and will soon be retiring.
“We spent five hours in Walmart; six carts of items,” Jelavich said.
Some of the items in their carts included a 32” flat screen TV, bicycles with helmets, and Nintendo Switch. There will also be a donated autographed sports memorabilia.
As if the gift, prize raffle, free entrance, and free food isn’t enough, there is another treat in store. After everyone has had a chance to pick up their prizes at 6:30 PM, the grand drawing for a laptop computer and carrying case will go to one lucky student.
While it is difficult to measure quantifiable results from the 3+ Club, Jelavich found that many of the donors were previous members themselves. She also has seen student members who have encouraged their younger siblings to strive for good marks on their report cards. ■
