Teen arraigned on manslaughter charges for traffic death of two Colusa men

A Sutter County teenager accused of vehicular manslaughter for the death of two Colusa men in a traffic collision in February of 2018 pleaded not guilty on May 6 to two counts of second-degree felony murder, vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, and a sentence enhancement of bodily injury on multiple victims.

According to the California Highway Patrol, 19-year-old Jacob Correia, of Meridian, was reportedly speeding and distracted by his cellphone on Highway 20 near Yuba City when he collided into the back of a pickup truck and then swerved into the eastbound lane, crashing head-on into another pickup truck, killing Jose L. Velazquez-Guerra, 48, and Deysi Reyes Turcios, 58, both of Colusa.

The CHP said alcohol or drugs were not contributing factors in the collision, but that illegal use of a cellphone did contribute to the men’s deaths, which led to the District Attorney issuing the complaint.

Correia will be allowed to remain out of jail on his own recognizance pending the outcome of the case, but the judge has imposed driving restrictions.

Correia is scheduled to next appear in Sutter County Superior Court at 1:30 PM on July 17 for setting of a preliminary hearing.■
