Six non-profit groups across Colusa County will sell fireworks starting Friday for a week leading up to the Independence Day Celebration.
Volunteers will brave the heat and sell fireworks dubbed “safe and sane” and bear the seal of the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
According to CalFire, fireworks illegal in the State of California include sky rockets, bottle rockets, roman candles, aerial shells, firecrackers, as well as other types that explode, go into the air, or move on the ground in an uncontrollable manner.
“I enjoy barbecuing and watching fireworks with my family on the Fourth of July; however the illegal fireworks have gotten out of hand,” said Arbuckle Fire Chief Casey Cox.
For a fifth year in a row, the Arbuckle Fire District has issued a warning about illegal fireworks and cracking down on those who break the law.
“Last year we cited a number of individuals and confiscated several illegal fireworks,” said Cox.
Not only is the concern for illegal fireworks the noise nuisance, but the possible hazard if used.
“Illegal fireworks can cause property damage, and even the loss of life if used improperly,” said Cox. “What people also don’t realize is that while we are battling a blaze caused from negligent use of a fireworks that it can cause serious delays for other emergencies.”
A few seconds of sparkle and ‘boom’ isn’t worth it, said Cox.
• Check that fireworks are allowed in the area of use.
• Make sure the firework has the state fire marshal’s “safe and sane” seal.
• Purchase only from legitimate organizations authorized to sell fireworks.
• Have a bucket of water, sand or garden hose available at launching site.
• Read all instructions before use.
• Dispose of used fireworks in water.
• Never alter, modify or enhance fireworks.
