The Princeton Portuguese Festa will get underway on Sunday, June 30, with a slight change in the time, but the festivities – more than a century old in the small Colusa County community – will otherwise remain the same.
The Princeton Holy Ghost and St. Anthony Festa is one of the area’s oldest and most colorful cultural events that celebrates Portuguese heritage and pride, and honors Queen Isabel’s sprit of compassion for the poor with a free meal.
The Festa will begin with parade at pageantry at 11 AM at the Portuguese Hall on Center St, located at 866 Center St. Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church will immediately follow at 11:30 AM (new time), and will include the coronation of Sophie Stocks as the 2019 Festa Queen.
Stocks, 17, is the daughter of Steven and Kimberly Stocks, of Princeton. She is a 2019 graduate of Colusa High School and is a freshman at Butte College. Her sidemaids are Kate Amaro, 13, the daughter of Mark and Diane Amaro, of Willows, and Madison Fonseca, 16, of Orland, the daughter of Ben and Tristan Parkerson, and Dan and Marci Fonseca.
The traditional lunch of sopas, roast beef, and potato salad will be served to all who attend at approximately 12:45 PM. Dinner will be served at 6 PM. Donations for the meal are accepted and used to continue the traditional each year.
Both the afternoon and evening events includes live auction and dancing. ■
