Local power lifter wins bronze in state competition

USA Powerlifting is the leading powerlifting organization in the United States. On Sunday, the state championship was held in Anaheim, at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Dylan Jones, of Maxwell, not only competed but worked his way to the podium, bringing home a bronze medal.

Being a self-taught contestant, Jones, a 2017 Maxwell High graduate, toughed out three resilient categories: squat, deadlift, and bench press.

“It takes a lot of time at the gym and discipline to endure these types of competitions,” Jones said. “This is my third time competing, and I thoroughly enjoy the vigorous tests of strength and mindset it takes to compete.”

In the Junior division for 20-23 year olds, 18 total contestants tested their strength alongside Jones. Jones put on a powerful performance with a 601-pound deadlift, a 452-pound squat and 364 pounds at bench press, leading him to the bronze medal.

“Dylan has taught himself how to power lift,” said longtime friend Zach Troughton. “I have had the honor of going to the gym with him and he has worked harder these last few years than I have ever seen him. He loves to lift, and because of that, he is going to do some big things while competing in power lifting.” ■
