After claiming the District II title just a little over a week ago, the Colusa Area Minor girls took to their own home field on July 3 and July 5 for a chance at the section champions title. Defeating Chico not once but twice gave Colusa Little League their first Capital section championship.
Needing to beat Chico twice, the All Star team thought “what if” when they took to the field in the first game. Offensively for Colusa, Aaliyah Santana led the timely hitting force to an early Colusa lead. On defense, third baseman Marlie Berry and shortstop Elizabeth Quintana both put forth brilliant efforts to keep runs off the scoreboard for Chico. Led by pitcher Cecelia Mitchum, Colusa pulled out a 7-4 victory, advancing them to the final championship game.
“Another amazing effort,” said coach Heather Nall.
The second game against Chico was held Friday night in Colusa and was winner take all. Colusa led by six innings at two different times in the game, but by the top of the seventh, the game was tied 12-12 and the game became a battle until the end, when Colusa managed to place a single run on the board for a 13-12 lead. Chico answered back with a triple to start the final inning but never found home plate, as Mitchum sealed the victory for Colusa with three consecutive strikeouts.
“We showed up to play today and put the wow factor on the field,” Nall said. “If we continue to play that way, we will compete.”
The win advances Colusa to the next round of State Championship playoffs. ■
