Boys All Stars take double loss in final play

The Westside All Star Minor boys team composed of 14 young athletes from Arbuckle, Maxwell, and Williams Little League faced some tough competition on the field in the past weeks. From the Arbuckle Astros and Tigers teams were Jimmy Anderson, Thomas Sweet, and Connor Harris. From the Williams Orioles was Daniel Velazquez, and from the Maxwell Dodgers were Karter Burt, Clint Girard, Lei Velazquez, Tanner Vierra, Nathan Gomez, Quinn Monroe, Bryce Cantrell and Yahir Alcarez. The All Star team was coached by Wade, DJ, and Trent Mathis. The team fell short in both games.

The first of the two games for the championship was held June 30 against the Peach Bowl team. Westside faced trouble from the batting box, with just a solo hit by Karter in the entirety of the game. Despite great pitching from Karter Burt, Tanner Vierra, and Quinn Monroe, Westside suffered a 14-0 loss.

The final game for Westside was played July 2 against Peach Bowl. Much like the first game, Westside couldn’t connect at the plate but found some success defensively with two outs from catcher Quinn Monroe. Yahir Alcarez made connection at the plate for the Westside offense, but was left on base, leaving Westside scoreless again. The final score was 8-0, with Peach Bowl taking the championship.

“The team struggled to find any rhythm at the plate,” DJ Mathis said. “There were some nice defensive plays by Alcarez, Burt, Monroe, and Gomez. I told the boys, after the game, to take this moment and use it as motivation for next year; to work on their hitting beyond just practices. They are all good young men and hopefully learn more from their losses, than from their victories.”
