Colusa Area Little League juniors find victory

For most county Little League athletes, softball has come to an end. But the end has not come for 11 competitive girls from Colusa. The 11-player roster is composed of Carly Simmons, Anahi Guzman, Abby Maciel, Abby Wolf, Brooklyn Bradbury, Naomi Silva, Clara Dorsey, Avery Lay, Lexi Avera, Ebony Lopez, and Elle Farris. The team is coached by Matt Simmons, Jamie Lay, and Sidney Lay. On July 1, the team claimed the District II champion title in the junior division.

A battle between just two teams in the division first brought Colusa up against the tough Sutter Area team on June 30. Anahi Guzman hit a monster homerun over the left field wall, late in the third, scored two runs for Colusa, and the scoring continued from there. A continuous stellar performance by Colusa showed on the scoreboard at the PeachBowl field, as Colusa Area took the first win of the series with a14-8 final score.

“Avery Lay was our starting pitcher,” Simmons said. “She pitched great. Lexi Avera came in and closed out with a great performance as well.”

The second and final game on July 1 against the same Sutter Area team brought zero disappointment to the local team, as Colusa’s batting proved to be the best it had all season. Paired with Avery’s consistent strike zone pitching, Colusa walked away victorious after just four innings with a 21-4 championship win.

“These girls played like a team that proved their hearts were truly in the game,” said Simons.
