Colusa FBLA competes at nationals

Colusa High School took seven students to compete at FBLA’s National Leadership Conference, in San Antonio, Texas, June 28 through July 3. Nearly 12,000 total attendees came from all over the U.S. and beyond, including from places like Haiti, Puerto Rico, Tanzania, and China.

Competitors Christian Reyna and Kelsea Whiting (Broadcast Journalism – team event), Chloe Ferraiuolo (Future Business Leader (FBL), Makayla Frias (Introduction to Public Speaking), Jessica Hickel (Project Management), Abigail Huskey (Public Relations), and Erik Wrysinski (Data Security) were accompanied by advisors Nikole Burg and Sonny Badaluco.

The Colusa officer team also competed in the Local Chapter Annual Business Report, a competitive event where judges review a submitted report of the chapter’s activities throughout the year. They earned a first place recognition at the Western Region meeting for Largest Professional Division Membership with 43 professional members from the local community. The second-place school had only 17.

In the absence of the California FBLA President, Kelsea Whiting, the CAFBLA vice president, representing the Northern Section, presided over the California Delegation meeting. She also represented CAFBLA on stage during the Conference Parade of States.

Students attended workshops on a variety of topics, including cracking college admissions, business Etiquette, and Interview tips and tricks. The group observed final rounds of competition for a variety of other competitive events, and networked with students from other states and countries by exchanging state pins, a National Leadership Conference tradition.

Chloe Ferraiuolo earned 10th place in FBL. Competition consisted of prejudged submission of a resume and cover letter, two rounds of interviews with industry professionals, and a multiple choice test about all things business and FBLA financial math, business communication, technology, parliamentary procedure, FBLA bylaws, etc.

“It was a great experience for our members,” Burg said. “While in San Antonio, students also toured the Alamo, attempted an escape room, and explored the River Walk. They visited the Tower of America for a great view of the city, and especially loved riding the electric scooters around downtown.”
