After claiming the District II title for the Junior division softball league, Colusa Area competed in a series of four games for the section title, last week. Despite valiant efforts, Colusa came up short against Martinez in the championship round and placed second.
First round of the championship series started July 7 for Colusa, against Oroville. With a complete team effort, Colusa pulled out the win and advanced to the second round of the section series, 9-0 final score.
July 8 Colusa met up with Martinez and struggled through out the game. A potential come back with a home run by Brooklyn Bradbury, over centerfield, looked to be a turning point for Colusa. But Martinez’s defense proved to be too much for Colusa, giving them their first loss on the championship journey, 17-6 final score.
Colusa played Oroville again July 9 with a tight nit game after four innings. After being down by 10 runs, Colusa clawed their way back to victory with a 16-15, final score.
“Girls kept their composure and kept playing, placing them in the championship game,” said coach Matt Simons.
Facing Martinez for the second time last Wednesday, in the championship game, Colusa failed to execute on offense against the tough Martinez team. Martinez walked away victorious and the championship banner after five innings, 12-2.
“The girls should be very proud of themselves and the way the played every game as a Team! They went all the way to the Championship Game, In Northern California State,” said Simons. ■
