Life, as I see it : A life well lived

13

What a pleasure it was this past week to celebrate the 85th birthday of Joyce Jalbert Paulson Fossum. We attended the celebration, hosted by her children Vernon Paulson and Judy Fossum Mathern, in Bowman, ND.

Joyce is an example of a woman we can all learn from, for sure.

She’s been a worker most of her life. In fact, it was just two years ago when my husband Tom met Joyce. It was on our wedding trip to Mount Rushmore. Joyce was still working. She was a dining room hostess at the monument’s restaurant.

Although she ran her own business for 50 years, there is also a long list of jobs and community involvement.

Joyce could be called a true ambassador for The Dakotas. She takes great pleasure in encouraging folks to see the states’ many sites. She especially loves to visit Medora, ND, Mount Rushmore, the Black Hills but also Glacier National Park, in Montana.

At 85, her favorite things remain: Hershey Bars, playing cards and dancing.

I hope when I’m 85, I can look back as Joyce does and see a life well lived.

The baby of the family, she was number 13 of 13 children and was born in New England, ND. Her older brother Archie Jalbert was also a special guest to the party. Archie was born number 11 of the 13, but on the same day as Joyce. It was a treat to see Joyce and Archie together and visiting like the kids they once were. Bless them both.

We have a big week coming up. Our dear friends Gary and Katherine Teragawa will visit here in Beach, ND. First, the four of us will meet in Deadwood, SD.

Gary first traveled here when he was best man at our wedding at Badlands Bible Camp, in Medora. A year later, Tom and I stood with Gary and Katherine when they were married in California.

Since visiting here, Gary has always wanted to return and share our beautiful country with Katherine.

They live in Georgia now, and we hope to make a road trip to the glorious South someday.

Again, I’m feeling blessed with the friends and family in my life.

Life is good today.
