Swim enthusiasts plunge into restarting team

Efforts are underway to see the Colusa Swim Team make a splash again in 2020.

That means former swimmers, new swimmers, and people who just want to get wet, have fun, or lend their support to a good cause can come together for a fundraising event next month like no other.

Just Keep Swimming is a “swim meet” to raise about $10,000 to revitalize the Colusa Swim Team, which last competed as the Cudas in 2013.

Melissa Yerxa Ortiz, a former Colusa competitor, believes that the longer the Colusa swim program stays underwater, the less likely it will ever resurface.

“This is just too good of a tradition to let it die,” said Ortiz, who is helping to organize the fundraiser.

The Aug. 17 event at the Colusa Swimming Pool will offer a variety of adult water events, in addition to a dinner, a snack bar, and 50/50 raffle. All are welcome to attend.

“We’re looking for kids and adults,” Ortiz said.

In addition to swim meet type events, there will be fun and silly events, including a “best dressed” swimmer contest, a “water wing” race, and a handicap competition, among others.

“The $30 registration fee allows you to sign up for as many events as you’d like,” Ortiz said.

The Colusa Swim Team, which was founded in the 1950s, was an active group of swimmers ages 5 to 18 that competed against swim teams from Corning, Orland, Willows, Gridley, and throughout the region.

Individuals and members of organized swim teams are invited. Those not wishing to get wet can come out to watch the swimmers, enjoy the dinner, cooked by the Colusa Lions Club, participate in the raffle, donate money, or take a dinner home.

Those wishing to participate can register online: eventbrite.com/e/just-keep-swimming-registration-65283299105.

Warm-ups begin at 5 PM at the Colusa Swimming Pool, 933 Parkhill St. Swim meet begins at 6 PM.

Ortiz said the event has so far raised just under $2,000 in donations, and the group hopes to raise another $8,000 at the event itself.

“I want people there,” she said. “I want them to get in the pool and show the kids that swimming is a cool thing to do.”

Those who want Colusa’s youth to once again get excited about swimming are also encouraged to spread the word. ■
