The ninth annual Colusa County Veterans Picnic will be held in Colusa on Saturday, July 27.
The picnic is open to the public and will include barbecue ribs or chicken, beans, salad, and soft drink. The meal ticket, which can be purchased in advance or at the event, for $15 includes the opportunity to win one of several door prizes, including a Traeger Grill, said Bill Tanner, a member of the picnic committee.
The Colusa County Veterans Picnic is held from 11 AM to 3 PM under the shade trees at Veterans Memorial Park, at the corner of 10th and Market streets.
Raffle tickets can be purchased for the opportunity to win a variety of hand and long guns, and gift baskets, gift certificates from local stores, businesses, and restaurants, and many other goods donated by individuals.
“We have a lot of prizes collected around the county,” said Tanner, who was a guest last week on “The Backpage,” the Pioneer Review’s weekly podcast.
Picnic goers will also have the opportunity to win a Henry 17HMR rifle in which the wooden stock is inscribed with VFW Post No. 2441 on one side and American Legion Post No. 218 on the other.
“We do this annually,” Tanner said. “This is our ninth year.”
The money raised at the event assists both of those local veterans organizations, special or community service projects, and aide for veterans.
“It’s just a great time,” said Don Parsons, Colusa County Veterans Services officer. “All the money raised after the bills are paid goes to supporting veterans in someway.”
The Colusa County Veterans Picnic was originally started as an opportunity for veterans and their families to get together and share stories.
Today, the event is open to anyone who wishes to attend, Tanner said.
Local veterans, as well as those from surrounding counties, and their families are encouraged to attend.
