Congressman joins Indivisible meeting in Colusa

U.S. Rep. John Garamendi, D-Walnut Grove, was the featured guest at Indivisible Colusa County’s monthly Conversations with Community Leaders series at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, in Colusa, on July 22.

After giving a brief update on the state of affairs in Washington, D.C. and thanking Indivisible members for their community organizing efforts over the past 2.5 years, Garamendi spent an hour responding to questions and concerns from the 40 Indivisible members and other local residents in attendance, Indivisible officials said.

The discussion kicked off with a question about the Democratic Congressional leadership’s strategy for addressing 10 instances in which Democrats believe President Trump may have obstructed special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

“Mr. Garamendi said he expects the House of Representatives to begin an impeachment inquiry this fall, after Congress returns to Washington from the August recess,” said Indivisible Colusa County Spokeswoman Jennifer Roberts, in a press release. “He explained that an impeachment inquiry is a precursor to bringing forth articles of impeachment, which would be initiated if Congress found proof of illegal activity.”

Roberts said audience members also voiced concerns about what they believe are inhumane conditions at immigrant detention centers and the ongoing separation of families at the border.

They also voiced concerns about escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, the Trump administration’s diversion of Pentagon funds to pay for border wall construction, and the need to protect Americans’ right to safe, legal abortions, Roberts said.

Garamendi encouraged the audience to stay engaged in the political process.

Acknowledging that the majority of California voters will choose the Democratic candidate for President in 2020, he urged those in attendance to focus on ensuring that Democrats retain the Congressional seats they gained in California in the 2018 election.

Indivisible Colusa County’s most recent Conversations with Community Leaders meeting was held Monday, Aug. 5, at El Jalisciense Restaurant, in Arbuckle, with the immigrants’ rights group NorCal Resist, who discussed their humanitarian work in Tijuana, San Diego, and the Sacramento Valley.
