The Williams Yellowjackets varsity volleyball team rallied last Thursday to defeat the Princeton Eagles for their first season win. Williams took the game, winning three of four sets.
Williams jumped out to an early lead in the first set propelled by the hands of senior Jackie Rivera who laid down five solid attacks. Nayeli Contreras added to the score lead with five aces, widening the score gap on the Eagles. Williams won the first set with a 25-15 final score.
Princeton came back in the second set with determination and pulled ahead of Williams mid set for a 18-16, over Williams, but Williams’ Estephanie Burmudez, assisted by Brenda Rivera, was a force at the net, delivering five kills on the Eagles defense and pushing the Yellowjackets to a 25-20 set win.
Down by two sets, Princeton came out strong in the third set and grabbed several score leads throughout. The Jackets struggled from the serve line and ultimately handed the win to the Eagles, 25-21. The last and final set of the game was a no contest win for Williams as Junior Litzie Leos served up five aces for the Jackets towards a 25-10 win.
“The girls came to play today,” said Williams Head Coach Kristi Hill. “We excelled at the net and on defensive to come together as team and grab the win.”
Williams, now 1-3, will go on the road with a match up against Biggs Thursday with a 5:30 PM start time for junior varsity, followed by a varsity match at 6:30 PM.
Princeton varsity will play Core Butte High School in Chico on Thursday. ■
