Tennis: Lady RedHawks gear up for a great tennis season

Colusa Lady RedHawks went up against Pleasant Valley Vikings on the tennis courts on Sept. 5. The home advantage was not with the RedHawks, who lost 8-1.

A cool breeze on a 98 degree day is nice except during a tennis match where athletes need to compensate for a shift to the light ball in play. The RedHawks played through the afternoon heat. Although they did not gain a win, they earned experience for the upcoming season. After six singles games, three doubles matches were played.

The winning match came from Senior Chaena Laux.

“My strategy was basically that I could see that she couldn’t hit my slices very well,” said Laux. “So I sliced a little more often and I tried lots of other things and figured it out.”

Laux said she would like to play for college but for now she is excited for this season.

“I think we’re going to do pretty well,” Laux said.

Laux said that they have two matches and three days of practice per week. Coach Beka Robertson is new to the team but also utilized the experience from her assistant, a former coach of 10 years, who came in to work with the girls on their forehand and backhand.

“We are doing good,” said Robertson. “It’s a preseason game and they’re playing their hearts out.”

With two starters and three non-starters as seniors and the rest as juniors and sophomores, Robertson is looking at the long game. Playing in the preseason, the Lady RedHawks won against Corning 7-2 previously.

“I saw my girls play hard and improve,” said Robertson. “It’s a preseason match and that’s all we’re working for. I would say that even though we didn’t win, it’s a win.”

The next match will be against Wheatland on Sept. 7. ■
