Despite losing to Colusa earlier in the week, the Williams Lady Yellowjackets found success on Sept. 5, on their home court against the Esparto Lady Spartans. Williams won the match in a 3-1 set victory, with final scores 25-17, 30-28, 21-25 and 25-21.
Jumping out to a large score spread in the first set, 16-8, Williams showed dominance on offense with 14 service receptions by Jovanna Hernandez and six aces by Estefania Bernudez, which propelled the Yellowjacket’s to a first set win.
Williams seemed to be at the mercy of their own bad service receptions in the second set, allowing Esparto 10 consecutive service points until a kill by Bermudez gave the Yellowjackets a side out.
Andrea Barajas closed the score gap with five aces from the service line, giving Williams a 20-18 lead. The close score sent the set to a 28-28 tie until Wiliams’ Jackie Rivera found success at the net with two kills to close the game at a 30-28 win.
Rivera heated up the scoreboard, laying down kill after kill, assisted by Brenda Rivera in the third and fourth sets. Williams fell short in the third but bounced back in the fourth with the help of Bermudez at the net to reek havoc on the Spartans, dishing out six kills of her own towards the game victory set, 25-21.
“The girls were determined to bounce back after their previous game,” said Head Coach Kristi Hill. “They had their moments but played together as a team and found success in doing so.”
Williams, 2-6, descends to Los Molinos Thursday for tournament play at the Los Mo “Beth Pilger” Invitational with first game action at 11:30 AM against Los Molinos, 11-6. ■
