Volleyball: Colusa takes win over Williams

For the first time since 2017, an intra-county match-up last Wednesday between the Williams Lady Yellowjackets and Colusa Lady RedHawks added another victory to Colusa’s record of 5-3, and dropped the Yellowjackets to a 1-6 overall record. Colusa picked up the victory in three sets with final scores 25-15, 25-13, and 25-10.

Williams came out strong in the first set and kept a solid pace with the RedHawks, with key kills on the net by Jackie Rivera and Estafania Bermudez. But Colusa’s middle hitter, Hannah Taylor reeked havoc on Wiliams’ defense with nine kills on the night.

The Yellowjackets found themselves within range during the second set with a close 12-10 score, trailing Colusa by just two, until RedHawks’ Annie Lay took to the service line. Lay smashed the Yellowjackets with five consecutive aces and three service points, propelling Colusa to their second set win.

Williams jumped out to an early 2-point lead in the third and final set, but fell short at the hands of Colusa’s Amber Morales who dished out 10 kills on the night and two blocks. Unable to force a turn-over, the Yellowjackets fell to a large score gap and recovery was out of sight, as Colusa racked up a team total of 32 kills on the night, sweeping the Jackets in  3-0 set game.

Lay also contributed 19 assists for the win and Hannah Taylor contributed nine kills. Kaylie Gwinnup added two aces and 12 service points.

“I felt the girls played well tonight,” said Colusa’s Head Coach, Tina Lyons. “They served well and worked as a team.”

Colusa hosts the Gridley Bulldogs, 4-7, on Wednesday, Sept. 11, with a 6 PM start time. ■
