The biggest little pro sport shop in the heart of the Pacific Flyway celebrates its platinum anniversary this month.
Kittle’s Outdoor Sport Co., which first opened its doors in September 1999, was inspired by Pat and Scott Kittle’s love of hunting and fishing.
The family-owned operation, located in Colusa, is known throughout California for its large inventory of waterfowl supplies.
Located just one block from the Colusa Sacramento River State Park and boat launching facility, Kittle’s, at the very height of the best salmon season in years, also boasts a vast fishing department worthy of the region’s world class rivers and lakes.
“It’s pretty exciting,” said Pat Kittle, on the longevity of the popular store. “We developed a business plan in 1999 when we started, and now we are looking at the business and a plan for the future.”
The two brothers were no strangers to retail when they first opened the business. Their father, Richard A. Kittle Jr., was a partner in the George M. Messick Ace Hardware, before he opened True Value Hardware in 1980, and another family member started Chick Montgomery in the 1940s. All carried sporting goods, but nothing dedicated almost entirely to hunting and fishing like Kittle’s.
After 10 years in its original location, Kittle’s expanded into the historic I.G. Zumwalt building at 888 Market St., in Colusa, and serves local as well as out-of-town outdoor enthusiasts who come to take advantage of all what Colusa County has to offer in the way of waterways and wildlife refuges.
“The employees at Kittle’s have a lot of experience and training with hunting and fishing,” Kittle’s said. “It is important that our customers get the right equipment for their outdoor adventure, and also have the right information about where, how, and when.”
Kettle’s also has plans to launch a new website and will have a separate site dedicated entirely to ammunition to help their customers keep up with California regulations. ■
