Volleyball: Williams fares well in Los Molinos tournament

The Williams Lady Jackets participated in the “Beth Pilger” Tournament in Los Molinos, last Thursday and Saturday. Eight total teams from Northern California participated, including Paradise, Los Molinos, Fall River, Portola, Redding Christian, Oroville, Maxwell, and Williams.

The Lady Jackets, who took a fourth seed finish last Thursday, opened up against host team, Los Molinos. With a prior match-up against the Lady Bulldogs, Williams was quick to play their best defense, but couldn’t keep pace and fell short in both sets.

Estefania Bermudez opened up a side out for Williams, laying down a back row attack against Los Molinos. Williams hung close in score in the first half of the set, trailing by a mere three points, 10-7, but fell into service errors. Los Molinos went on to the claim the win in a 2-0 set score.

Tough competition came at Williams yet again, with game two against Redding Christian.

Final game play of the day set Williams up against Oroville.

Aces by Brenda Rivera gave the Lady Jackets a slight lead early on, 8-6. Williams’ Aracely Reyes found defensive success at the net, blocking several kills by the Oroville Lady Tigers. Williams ended their day with a 1-1 tie against Oroville.

On Saturday, the Lady Jackets opened up against tourney winners, Fall River.

Coming up short in the first set, Williams came out fierce – both offensively and defensively – and claimed the second set win primarily at that hands of Bermudez and Litzie Leos, but succumbed to their lack of efforts in the third match, taking a 2-1 set loss.

Portola brought on Williams’ second match-up of the day and another close set of rallies.

The Lady Jackets fell short in the first set, but claimed a second win, 1-1 on the match-up.

For Williams, Bermudez again was a force at the net, going seven for nine on kills against Portola. Service trouble from the Williams side essentially handed Portola the set win and Williams a 2-1 set loss. Final game play arose against Maxwell.

Estefania Bermudez was awarded All Tourney and the Lady Jackets were seventh in the tournament. Williams will host Biggs tomorrow night with a 5:30 PM junior varsity start time and 6:30 PM for varsity.

Williams JV seeded first both days in the tournament, winning 11 of 12 sets. The JV Jackets played fourth seed Redding Christian in the semi-finals but fell short with a 2-1 set loss. All tourney selections went to Gaby Lopez and Brianna Jaime and the team claimed a third place finish.
