Last Friday’s full moon brought no good luck to the Maxwell Panthers varsity football team, as visiting Fall River ran away with a 37-12 victory.
Maxwell’s five-year struggle to conquer Fall River continued after the Bulldogs took their first possession on their own 40-yard line. Fall River’s Ryan Osborn used up just seconds on the clock for a quarterback keep, taking an early 6-0 lead on the Panthers.
Short on downs, Maxwell was forced to punt, as Fall River took over on Maxwell’s 10-yard line. Fall Rivers’ Timmy Westlund found success in the end zone, widening the Bulldogs’ score gap to 14-0 over the Panthers.
Maxwell’s next possession was a 70-yard kick-off return by Ignacio Velasquez for a Panther touchdown. A interception by Velasquez was short lived as Fall River recovered a Maxwell fumble. Able to score on the turnover widened Fall Rivers’ lead to 22-6 before the half.
Fall Rivers kick-off to Panthers after the half, was a series of incompletions by the Panthers, as the Bulldogs once again capitalized on the Maxwell’s defense to claim another touchdown run and a 30-6 Fall River lead.
Early in the fourth quarter, Panther quarterback Trent Hendrix connected with Isaiah Cardenas for a second Panther touchdown, but that would be Maxwell’s last time in the end zone.
The Bulldogs would go on to finish the game with a 25-point spread over the Panthers.
Stats were unavailable for this game. Maxwell will descend to rivalry team Biggs on Friday night for a conference game at 7 PM. ■
