The Williams Lady Jackets took the win over the Biggs Lady Wolverines last Thursday with set scores 25-16, 25-16, 25-20, and 25-11, taking a 3-1 set win.
Williams took an early lead in the first set with powerful kills from outside hitter Jackie Rivera, but Williams’ defense slowly watched their score gap dissipate with repetitive flaws on service receptions.
Biggs capitalized on Williams’ flaws and pulled ahead to grab the first set win over the Lady Jackets, 1-0
Determined to not be shut out, Williams came back in the second well on their game. Rivera again laid down several kills on the Wolverines’ defense, paired with Estefania Bermudez. Serving by Brianna Mercado added to Williams’ score, and the lead continued at the hands of Bermuda, pushing Williams to tie the game with a 1-1 set score.
Much like the second set, Williams found strength in their offense, wreaking havoc on the Wolverines from the net. Rivera again lit up the scoreboard with contributions on kills, paired with four straight aces from Jasmine Rodriguez.
Biggs was able to lesson the score gap with several shanked service receptions by the Lady Jackets, but Bermudez closed out the set from the service line, giving Williams a 2-1 set lead.
Andrea Barajas set the pace for the fourth set, with six straight service points, for a 6-0 Lady Jacket lead. Rodriguez blocked the Wolverines from the net, securing several points towards the score gap. Cassie Tortoledo handled the Lady Jackets defense with four attacks, propelling Williams to a 25-11 set score and giving Williams the game victory.
Williams, 3-12, has an away conference match-up Thursday against Hamilton. Junior Varsity starts at 5:30 PM and varsity at 6:30 PM. ■
