Vehicular manslaughter case moves forward

A Meridian youth accused of vehicular manslaughter following the death of two Colusa men in a traffic collision in February of 2018 will be back in Sutter County Superior Court on Oct. 2 for the setting of his preliminary hearing.

Jacob Correia, 20, is charged with second-degree felony murder and vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence in the death of 48-year-old Jose L. Velazquez Guerra and 58-year-old Deysi Reyes Turcios, both of Colusa.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Correia, then 19, was reportedly speeding and distracted by his cellphone on Highway 20, near Yuba City, when he collided into the back of a pickup truck, and then swerved into the eastbound lane, crashing head-on into another pickup truck, killing Velazquez Guerra and Reyes Turcios.

The CPP said alcohol or drugs were not contributing factors in the collision, but that illegal use of a cellphone did contribute to the men’s deaths, which led to the District Attorney issuing the complaint.

Correia remains out of jail on his own recognizance pending the outcome of the case, although the judge has imposed driving restrictions. ■
