Girl Scouts are looking to finish up enrollment before the year begins later this month. After an informational meeting in Arbuckle on Aug. 25, there are only few slots left for Daisies in Troop No. 995.
Beginning this month, the meetings will be facilitated in the Williams Community Church, located at 315 9th street, and are tentatively set for every other Monday. The enrollment is open to anyone in Colusa County, so leaders chose Williams because it is a central location for the county.
Colusa’s Troop No. 348 is well established, which meant that last year, enrollment was completely full. So Lauren Allen, of Arbuckle – who wanted her daughter to partake of the experience – started up her own troop, which is also open to anyone in the county.
“I was so reluctant because I never did any of this,” said Allen. “They said, ‘Oh you just go to training; we teach you everything.’ I went to training, I was just terrified.” But Allen’s troop did well enough last year in cookie sales that the troop was able to have a trip to San Francisco, take the ferry, go to the Exploratorium museum, dinner, and were able to have a Build-a-Bear party.
Cookie sales begin in January and will continue through March, and since the sales go back to the troop, it is a group choice of what to do with the funds.
“Last year, our girls sold cookies in the rain so they got a ‘Storm Trooper’ patch,” Allen said.
Patches are the fun “swag,” Allen explained, whereas the badges are what the girls earn.
Alyssa Jimenez was a volunteer mother last year and because two leaders are required, Jimenez is filling in for the previous co-leaders.
“We’re trying to build confidence in the girls,” said Jimenez. “We do a lot of girl-led activities. Snack time, cleaning up. They have to participate; they have to be involved. We’re just there to guide them and wrangle them back.”
Enrollments are welcomed after the October start of the year. Those interested can sign up online at www.girlscoutshcc.org and the only requirement is $25 for insurance, which can be assisted if needed.
Council representative Bridgette Harmon is available at firstname.lastname@example.org. For more information on the troop, email Allen at email@example.com. ■
