Volleyball: Season ends well for Williams JV Volleyball

The Lady Yellowjackets Junior Varsity volleyball team ended on a pretty high note for the first time in more than a decade.

The Jackets haven’t displayed a competitive season since taking the SVL League championship in 2006, but this year’s 14-player roster brought game to the 2019 season and set the bar high for next year’s players.

An impressive 21-3-1 overall record and 7-2 in league is just what the Yellowjacket volleyball program needed, as four of those players will join the varsity team next year in effort to replace eight graduating seniors.

“These ladies are truly remarkable,” said JV coach Cheri Azevedo. “The varsity will acquire some great talent next year. Gaby Lopez played middle for my team the past two years. She was the heart of our team this year and will be a great asset for Coach Hill. Rylee Brunner is a versatile player who brings not only an understanding of the game but leadership to the team.”

Evelyn Perez and Emily Cano will also advance to varsity next year.

“Cano was our libero this year,” Azevedo said. “Her passing technique should be beneficial to the defense. Perez has quick feet so you should see her on that outside position next year.”

The JV Jackets were runners-up this year in the Mid-Valley Northern Section, with just two league losses against the tough East Nicolaus team.

“We were able to take a 2-1 win over East Nic on their home court early in league play, but fell short on our home court in the second match-up,” Azevedo added. “The battle in the third match-up was intense but we fell just a few points shy in the third set of the game. The girls played as a team and lost as a team and leaving it all on the court is one of the most admirable traits these girls display.” ■
