Abby Dunlap competed at the Regional Resource Conservation District Speak-Off on Oct. 22, in Orland.

Dunlap is a junior at Maxwell High School and on Oct. 2, had won the local speak-off contest before moving up to the regional level.

Dunlap placed third at Friday’s contest and won $100.

This years topic was “Why do we need to act to save the Monarch Butterfly. What can RCD do to help?”

Due to her research on the topic of Monarch Butterflies, the Maxwell FFA will be pursuing a grant to grow Milkweed to be planted in the community, according to Amber Charter, Maxwell High School Agricultural instructor, adding that if the grant is awarded, the Horticulture class will also be planting Milkweed seeds.

“We think more people would be willing to plant Milkweed in their yards to help the butterfly population if they could readily get the plants locally,” Charter said.

Dunlap will continue to compete in speaking contests in the spring within the FFA organization. ■
